CV

In search of definition I find my name in graphite. I can no longer divide myself or deny the existence of a penciled affair. Every light and every shadow becomes my mirror, my own contradiction. I undress myself to the unknown viewer, tempered. I am a drawing and reality my vulnerable liaison.

Gildo Medina, the young 34 year old Mexican artist is considered one of the most successful and important illustrators from around the globe by the world's leading publisher of Fine Arts, TACHEN in the last edition "100 illustrators ".

Although Gildo Medina retains from his juvenile inclinations and subsequent international academic record a profound relationship with figurative art, truly some kind of watermark signature, his artistic journey is undoubtedly a paradigm of joyful versatility and a playful juxtaposition of techniques and cultural influences. Mexico provided for that ubiquitous surrealist detachment, Florence for the most demanding technical crafts of tradition, Berlin for some rough boldness, Hong Kong for a touch of wisdom and more awareness about human complexity, new york for its unique energy, Paris for the countless shades of sophistication...

The young Gildo Medina began his academic training with the most delicate and strict techniques in drawing and painting, starting with special studies in visual arts at the academia de San Carlos (Mexico City 1993). He then graduated in graphic design at the Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico City 1997), and resumed his education in academic drawing, attending studies of visual arts at the Accademia delle’Arte, (Florence, 2002). In the wake he fulfilled a postgraduate certificate in professional studies on photography and design at the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s School of Arts (London 2004).

However, circumscribing Gildo Medina to some cursus honorum would be ludicrous: Gildo Medina, the man, cannot be dissociated from the artist. Together, they result in that very special blend of a magical hand, beautifully trained, and a character capable of absorbing the mosaic, the noises, the postures of our time, then twisting, shaking, shaping that odd mixture until it becomes a shared emotion. Gildo Medina’s least talent is certainly not his ability to do so through a wide range of means, from a sheer pencil to a full-fledged movie.

Among the younger generation of contemporary artists who occupy the emerging world art scene, Gildo Medina’s work is already widely acknowledged by specialists and professionals, for he subtly blurs the lines between fine arts and design. Notably, he has received over twenty-five awards in their different disciplines worldwide. Among these: 8 Quorum Prize and 9 A! Diseño Prize in Mexico, the Effie Prize in France, a New York festivals awards and MTV Music Award in the United States.
Gildo Medina’s exhibitions include “Welcome to Reality“ Vice Gallery Mexico, 2011 “Le Miroir de Dionysos” Galerie 13 Jeannette Mariani, Paris in 2010 and Hardcore Gallery at PINTA (Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art Fair) London in 2010 among others.

The artist’s achievements have been celebrated and his work reproduced in several books and many magazines, by publishers such as Gestalten and
Tachen, and in several magazines around the world, among others the New Yorker in the United States, Vogue Latin America, Which Magazine Paris, Hek Mag Berlin, Wired Magazine, Le Vif l’express France, Prestige Magazine Hong Kong, Edno Magazine Bulgaria, Elle Magazine Latin America, Commons and Sens Tokyo.

Although pieces by him are now part of several highly regarded private collections in México, France, Germany, Israel and Belgium, alongside works signed by artists as famous as Alechinsky, Combaz, Man Ray or Corneille, Gildo Medina remains a discreet, almost humble personality, steadily working on new projects. Tirelessly seeking for new paths to explore, he defines himself neither as a nomad or a rover, but as a man, an eye, a hand in a world in which walls and borders ineluctably collapse. For most of the time, he works and lives between Paris, and Mexico.
